How to Battle Across The Stars
BattleTech is largely played in one of two formats: Classic, and Alpha Strike. Classic uses the older-style rules along with a hex-based system of movement for a more simulation approach. Alpha Strike is a newer adaptation, favoring quick gameplay with less-involved rules, giving it a more 'arcade' feel compared to Classic.

Starter Boxes
If it's BT Classic you're wanting to dive into, these may be a solid first step. The Clan Invasion set is optional, but does require the AGoAC box.
Manuals
The Total Warfare sourcebook will have expanded rules for included non-mech units into your armies (tanks, aircraft, etc.)
BattleTech: Alpha Strike
Starter Boxes
Picked this up, I'd call it good to start your collection for Alpha Strike as it comes with a condensed rulebook for that system, along with Inner Sphere and Clan mechs, and even serviceable cardboard buildings and trees for terrain.
Manuals
After you've gotten used to the rulebook that comes in the Alpha Strike starer, If you can get your hands on the Commander's Edition, it has more advanced rules to really add more depth to your AS games. The latest version (2021) seems to be very hard to come by.
New Mechs
There are Lance/Star boxes available to boost your collection, or even individual 'salvage' boxes.
